Academy Workshop 15: Advancing Psycho-Oncology Care and Services by Optimizing Knowledge Translation (KT) Research and Practice
Tuesday, 5 November 2013, 13:30 - 17:30
Goudriaan Room I

Speaker: Melissa C. Brouwers

One of the most consistent findings from clinical and health services research is the failure to translate research into practice and policy.  As a result, patients and clients do not benefit optimally from advances in healthcare and may be exposed to risks and health care systems are not optimally organized and managed.  The science and practice of knowledge translation (KT) aims to reduce this gap.  At its core, KT is a dynamic and iterative process that includes the synthesis, dissemination, exchange and ethically sound application of knowledge to improve health, provide more effective health services and products, and strengthen the health care system.

In this workshop, participants will be presented with the core concepts and principles of KT.  Then, using the Knowledge to Action Framework and psycho-oncology case studies, the participants will work in small groups to:

- Identify the problem and consider and appraise candidate knowledge solutions
- Explore how the knowledge may need to be tailored or adapted to fit contextual norms
- Analyze barriers and enablers to knowledge  utilization by key stakeholders
- Design and implement  the most appropriate interventions that could be used to facilitate knowledge utilization
- Choose strategies to monitor use of knowledge and evaluate its impact
- Determine tactics to sustain knowledge use

Target Audience: This workshop is designed for:
Clinical and system leaders responsible for advancing quality care in psycho-oncology for their professional team, their institution, and/or their region
Individuals interested in learning how to better incorporate evidence into their professional responsibilities
Psycho-oncology researchers interested in improving the KT components of their research programs
Individuals affected by cancer who are interested in the field of knowledge translation
Beginners to mid-level experts in knowledge translation will benefit most from this workshop.
